INTRODUCTION The objective of this document is to inform problem gambling intervention (treatment) service providers of the current tertiary learning opportunities (on-site and distance learning) in New Zealand for both general addiction qualifications and problem gambling qualifications. In addition, distance learning opportunities for overseas institutions, offering problem gambling courses, are also detailed.
BACKGROUND The following describes the current tertiary learning on-site and distance learning opportunities in New Zealand for both general addiction qualifications and problem gambling qualifications. In addition, distance learning opportunities for overseas institutions offering problem gambling courses are also detailed.
Currently, minimum competency standards are in the process of being developed for the Problem Gambling Treatment (PG) sector that also align with Tobacco Cessation (TC) and alcohol and other drug (AOD) practitioners’ competencies as these in turn are reviewed. In addition, a number of alignments are likely to be required, including the seven Lets Get Real essential knowledge, attitudes and skills that will be integrated into all addiction and mental health workforce development from this year. Other competency frameworks, such as Takarangi, Seitapu, Real Skills Plus Seitapu and Real Skills Plus CAMHS will also be linked to the PG competencies. A core competency across the addictions may be expected, with PG practitioners having basic skills to address AOD and TC problems that co-exist in PG clients. These PG competencies are likely to include general addiction knowledge skills and attitudes to meet the diverse needs of PG clients. In addition, it is likely that qualifications will form part of the levels within PG competency standards as is currently the case with AOD practitioners.
The information below is therefore provided as a current summary of courses, certificates, diplomas and degrees available for both general and PG addiction educational opportunities. As competencies are identified for the PG sector, the content of these courses may either remain as partially or fully relevant, change to adapt to these competencies, or new courses may be offered that align with the competencies.
As it is likely that in meeting levels of competency, that existing experience, skills and qualifications are acknowledged in a transition period (often call ‘grandparenting’) there is no advantage in delaying enrolment in a course until further clarification around PG competencies is confirmed.
